Hanging Up | The Horse Whisperer

Meg
Ryan, Lisa Kudrow, Diane Keaton, & Walter Matthau
I know, most of you guys out there adore cutesie little Meg Ryan. Although she is not my personal favorite (generally I'd like to slap her upside the head), I have to admit that she did a fair job of acting the put-upon sister in this one. |
| The title appears to have been derived from the
fact that telephones are a major part of the action (don't expect to
relax: they're always ringing, getting dropped, or otherwise
disturbing your peace) and because Dad Walter Matthau is getting ready to
"hang up" and has just been put into a nursing home. One
could also say that the characters have a lot of "hang ups."
On top of what we are supposed to feel about the elder sis and her effortless ability to steal her sisters' thunder, Diane Keaton seems obsessed with her appearance (every scene seems to have been orchestrated to prove that she still has great legs). Lisa Kudrow, on the other hand, is delightful as the insecure younger sister vying for attention. Neither pay much attention to Dad, and Meg gets stuck with all the responsibility. Good thing she has a few good memories to keep her warm (somebody found a good double for Matthau in the flashbacks), because the crusty piece of insulting saggy flab that's left is not too endearing. Okay, okay, he's a funny guy, admittedly. But anyone who has had to deal with an alcoholic family member will probably find this story rather painful. |
