Movie Reviews - Y

| The first thing you should know about this movie - no, it's not a sequel to Sleepless in Seattle!! What it is is the return of everyone's fave rom-com team, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, along with a new remade version of 1940's The Little Shop Around The Corner. The differences between Little Shop and You've Got Mail? Well, I'd say the most significant change would be the replacement of mail with e-mail. One has to admit, it's a bit more realistic this way - mail, we all know, takes more than an hour to write, and a decade to send, whereas e-mail could never take longer than thirty minutes. This obvious difference represents, to me, one great accomplishment we've made since 1940 - everything is faster, everything is automatic. We have the Internet to provide us with the world in seconds, and e-mail to provide twenty minute/day relationships. We call it 'modernization'. But at least we see the characters displaying a bit of classic wistfulness, anxiety, and longing. "When shall we meet?" They ask. Of course the audience is yelling, "Yes, yes, do it!" But it may take longer than you care to wait. My overview; it's a very cute, lovely movie, and the charm of both Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks picks up the pace enough to make it an enjoyable experience. Then again, I may just think it was slow because it takes longer to watch You've Got Mail than to carry take care of my daily correspondence over the Internet. |
